Chena Hot Springs Resort – Fairbanks, Alaska

Guests visiting the Chena Hot Springs Resort in Fairbanks, Alaska, experience so much more than a simple soak in the hot springs. Boasting the world’s largest year-round ice museum, this hot spring resort is sure to help relax while taking in Alaska’s breathtaking northern lights.

History

Discovered in 1905, the waters at Chena Hot Springs quickly became famous for its ability to soothe aches and pain. As word spread across the state, Fairbanks residents and gold miners began flocking to the hot spring to relax and unwind. Today, Chena Hot Springs Resort is known as one of the most popular vacation and wedding destinations in the state.

The Hot Spring Pools

Whether you’re planning a quick day trip or a long weekend of healing and rejuvenation, Chena Hot Springs Resort allows both day guests and overnight visitors.

While access to the hot spring facilities is included for overnight guests, those wishing to drop-in must purchase a day-pass. Each pass provides guests with access to the indoor heated pool and both hot tubs as well as the use of the locker and shower facilities. Additionally, individuals over the age of 18 are permitted to use the outdoor hot springs lake, known for its breathtaking views.

The indoor heated pool and both hot tubs have been chlorinated whereas, the outdoor hot spring remains natural and untouched. The average temperature of the outdoor hot spring is 106°F while the indoor heated pool hovers around 90°F.

Note: The outdoor hot lake is handicap-accessible with assistance. The resort has a wheelchair available for guests needing it to roll into the water.

Activities at Chena Hot Springs Resort

There are three organized day trips are available to visitors of Chena Hot Springs; the Day Trip to Chena, the Northern Lights Tour, and the Sled Dog Tour. Shuttles for these trips depart from Fairbanks throughout the day and include a hot springs pass, towel, and Aurora Ice Museum tour.

Depending upon your selection, you will experience either a geothermal renewable energy tour, take a snow coach ride under the northern lights, or ride a dog sled/dog cart. If you get hungry after your tour, food is available at the cafe, ice bar, or the resort’s greenhouse to table restaurant.

After a long day out and about, stop by the massage therapy cabin for a massage, hot stone service, or reflexology session. Offering packages anywhere from 30 – 90 minutes, you are sure to unwind and feel renewed.

Lodging

There are multiple overnight lodging accommodations and packages available at Chena Hot Springs Resort. In addition to twenty-four marked sites for RVs and camping, the resort offers lodging for solo travelers, couples, and families. All overnight guests are given unlimited access to the hot spring facilities on-site as well as a towel.

Taking the 60-mile scenic journey from Fairbanks is a glorious adventure in itself.

  1. Follow AK-2 W to Chena Hot Springs Rd.
  2. Take the Chena Hot Springs Road exit from AK-2 W.
