Good Afternoon in French

January 5, 2020 By //  by Hogan Murphy

How to Say Good Afternoon in French

Just like every other country, greeting someone at different times of the day is customary. Whether you meet someone in the morning or afternoon, French culture considers greeting first as a polite way to start a conversation. The common phrase for good afternoon in French is – bonjour.

Bonjour – This is the formal greeting in the afternoon. Bonjour can be translated to mean “good day” in English. This is why it is often common for people to greet using this French greeting phrase both in the morning and afternoon. Most French-speaking countries will say this phrase once it’s not dark outside.
Another way to say good afternoon in French is bonne après-midi. While bonne après-midi translates to “good afternoon,” bonjour is more flexible, hence, considered an all-purpose term. Bonjour is often polite and works in virtually all situations. If you plan to visit a French-speaking country, ensure that you learn this French greeting phrase.
