Guide to Hiking Trails around the World
Here are a few tips on preparing for a hike:
1. Do your research – We often hear of people wanting to hike up to a waterfall or take in a scenic view from 14,000ft up, but what they don’t do is study the hiking trail to see what they are in for. Make sure you know what you are getting into ahead of time and if it’s something you can handle. Not all trails are easy walking trails and some can get quite dangerous.
2. Gear up – Hiking can range from 30 minutes up to several hours. Make sure you have the proper gear and supplies such as hiking shoes, water, change of clothes, and a compass. The last thing you want to do is get stuck out in the wilderness without the proper supplies to get back.
3. Let other people know where you are going – Chances are you won’t have cell phone reception so make sure other people are aware of where you are going, when you are leaving, and an idea of when you should be back. If things take a turn for the worst, it’s good to have people know where they can find you.
4. Don’t over do it – Hiking can be a lot of fun, but if you challenge yourself to scale a tough trail and aren’t physically ready for it you can do more harm than good. If your body starts to hurt, legs get tired, you have a tough time breathing, or you are feeling light headed, stop and take some time to recover. There is no shame in turning around and trying again another day.
