How to Say I’m Sorry in French

French culture appreciates courtesy and respect. Also, you are expected to quickly apologize when you make a mistake or wrong someone. If you’re planning to visit any French-speaking country, it is important that you know how to apologize. The common phrase used to say I’m sorry in French is – je suis désolé.

Je suis désolé – This is considered the most basic way to say sorry in French. This French phrase can be used the same way you say I’m sorry” in English. It is considered formal apology and can be said to anyone, including family, friend, coworker, your employer, or even a stranger.

Furthermore, saying this French greeting phrase shows that you are apologizing for what you did and also sad about the entire situation. Also, you can say Je suis désolé to someone who is experiencing a bad feeling or situation to show sympathy or sadness.

Few Examples of when to say I’m Sorry in French

I’m sorry for stepping on you. – Je suis désolé de t’avoir crié dessus.

I’m sorry for coming late. – Je suis désolé d’être arrivé en retard.

I’m sorry for your loss. – Je suis désolé pour votre perte.

It was my fault. I’m sorry. – C’était de ma faute. Je suis désolé
