Jordan Hot Springs, Middle Fork, Gila River, NM.

Jordan Hot Springs – Magdalena, New Mexico

November 7, 2020 By //  by Robin Boch

Nestled away in the Gila Wilderness in Magdalena, New Mexico, lies the Jordan Hot Springs. Offering peace and serenity after a long day of hiking and exploring, there is no better way to relax and refresh than enjoying this primitive, natural beauty.

Hot Springs and Pools

The Jordan Hot Springs can be accessed by hiking about 7 miles on the Little Bear Canyon Trail in the Gila National Forest. It is encouraged that visitors wear waterproof shoes since the hike can be difficult and requires you to cross about 15 rivers, including the Gila River.

The Jordan Hot Springs pool is large enough to fit a moderate-sized group of people. This primitive, clothing-optional hot spring is comprised of a natural rock wall, with small pebbles at the bottom of the pool. A large fallen tree is positioned across the hot spring, forming a natural bridge, perfect for photos.

The temperature of the pool ranges from 94°-100°F, depending on the season. It should also be mentioned that this spring contains amoeba, which can cause meningitis. Visitors should keep their head above water at all times to prevent infection.

Additionally, this area is abundant in wildlife and rattlesnakes. Make sure to watch your surroundings while hiking and wear proper footwear.

Camping

If hiking 14-miles roundtrip seems like too much activity for one day, spend the night, or a week, at one of the backcountry campsites nearby. Be sure to bring what you need, as there are no amenities near the hot spring. You can even bring your dog along as long as you keep them on a leash!

Since there are no restrooms, and this area is heavily visited, make sure you follow proper “waste” disposal. To keep the area sanitary, bury your body’s organic byproducts at least 200ft away from the campsite and spring. Remember to leave with any items you came with and, if you make a fire, to watch it diligently to keep it contained.

While planning your trip, make sure to check weather forecasts, as flash floods often occur and could significantly affect the water levels of the Gila River. The area is free to the public and is best used from May through November.

Getting There

From Silvery City, NM:

  1. Take NM-15 through Pinos Altos.
  2. Continue on this road until you reach the TJ Corral.
  3. Follow the Little Bear Canyon Trail for about 4.25 miles until you get to the Middle Fork of the Gila River.
  4. Continue on the trail in the upstream direction for about 2.5 miles.
  5. Follow the steep path to the hot spring.
