Where the Appalachian Mountains stretch across the Northeast, a small section is claimed by the state of Maryland. Among these snow-capped peaks, skiers and snowboarders can find the state’s only ski area.

Wisp Resort is a year-round hub of activity that began in 1955 as a cow pasture. The resort grew over time and is now also the state’s only 4-season destination.

In the winter, Wisp Resort receives an average of 130 inches of snow, a higher amount than some of the top resorts in the Northeast. Although Wisp receives a reasonable amount of snow, the ski season is short. Often Wisp Resort will open in mid-December and close by mid-March, despite snowmaking abilities on 90% of the mountain.

The resort is situated in Garrett County in the far northwest corner of Maryland less than 10 miles from Interstate 68. The county is the snowiest in the state and a good option for snowmobiling or snowshoeing along trails.

Wisp is located on 137 skiable acres and features 3 terrain parks for varying levels of difficulty. The resort’s Beginner Park, Intermediate Park, and Central Park include kickers, boxes, and rails of all shapes and sizes, so trick skiers and snowboarders can improve their skills.

Nearly half of the 33 trails at Wisp are intermediate, the rest are equally divided between beginner and expert slopes. Most slopes are open for night skiing Tuesday through Saturday.

Skis, snowboards, helmets, boots, and poles can be rented at the mountain and there are several packages that combine equipment rental with lessons for all ages. Wisp Resort has a goal to make skiing affordable for all ages through its Mission: Four’Dable program. The deal includes 4 lift tickets for all ages at a discounted price that can be used by up to 4 people.

For those interested in taking a break from skiing, the resort has a tube park and mountain coaster. The coaster glides past several chairlifts and carts are operated by hand brakes, so riders can control their own speed.

During the off-season, Wisp Resort visitors can enjoy zip lines, kayaking, mountain biking, and archery. The resort is primarily accessed at the base, but some parking is available at the top of the mountain. Those not riding the slopes can join skiers in their party for dining and an incredible view in the middle of the day.
