Remington Hot Springs

Remington Hot Springs – Kearn Canyon, California

October 21, 2020 By //  by Natiaha Murphy

Located around forty miles outside of Bakersville, California, Remington Hot Springs is a cluster of three geothermally heated pools located along the Kern River. Unlike most of the hot springs located within this area, Remington is free and undeveloped.

Hot Spring Pools

To access the pools from the parking lot, there is a short, quarter-mile hike to the Kern River. The pools, which are man-made and maintained by locals, offer varying temperatures, with the warmest being well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Besides the three geothermally heated mineral pools adjacent to the river, there exists an additional cooler temperature pool, known as the Miner’s Tub, about fifty feet away.

Remington Hot Springs is often very crowded due to its position as one of the only underdeveloped hot springs in the vicinity. Similarly, its undeveloped nature often attracts nudist visitors. Technically, because the pools are located on Forest Service Land, public nudity is considered illegal, and rangers have been known to occasionally patrol and hand out tickets to nude bathers.

Camping

While there is no official campground nearby, there are a few sites near the main parking lot. Additionally, campers may find more secluded spots along the trail leading to the Kern River. As is expected, there are no facilities, including restrooms, fire rings, or tables, so campers must be prepared and plan ahead.

For those seeking a less minimalist camping experience, Sandy Flat Campground and Hobo Campground are located a few miles to the east. These are traditional campgrounds, offering more amenities, and reservations must be made in advance.

Take a day trip out to the Remington Hot Springs and soak in one, or all, of the pools available next to the Kearn River!
