Nevada is home to hundreds of primitive and developed hot springs, including the Steamboat Hot Springs Healing Center in Reno, Nevada. As one of the most popular destinations for relaxation, the Steamboat Hot Springs Healing Center & Spa combines old-world charm with new world amenities and services.
In 1863, Mark Twain briefly wrote about this hot spring, saying that, “..one can hear a constant rumbling and surging, somewhat resembling the noises peculiar to a steamboat in motion.” These brief words on his experience ended up becoming the inspiration for naming the site, and this area since been referred to as the Steamboat Hot Springs.
A popular location for Native Americans to set up their winter camp, this site was home to the third-largest geyser in the US. With eruptions that rocketed the steaming water 60-80 feet in the air, it was the perfect place to escape the freezing winter months.
In the mid-1800s a hospital was set up using the therapeutic waters to cure afflictions. As the nearby Comstock Lode attracted silver miners from all over, the area became a bustling hub of activity. Hotels and other buildings were constructed to manage the massive influx until a massive earthquake occurred that sealed the geyser.
Over the next 40 years, many buildings were ravaged by fires and the land changed hands multiple times. Eventually, a second hospital named the Pioneer State Health Hotel was constructed in 1937, most of which still stands today.
