How To Say Thanks in French

Like many other cultures in different parts of the world, French people like to show appreciation or express gratitude when they receive a gift or favor from someone. A common phrase used to show appreciation or say thanks in French is – merci.

Merci – This is the simplest and most common way to show appreciation, give acknowledgment, or express gratitude in French. To add a little extra gratitude, you can say merci beaucoup, meaning “much thanks” or “thank you very much.”

In addition, this French expression of appreciation phrase is considered formal and polite. Whether you’re talking to a family member, friend, an attendant, a waiter, or even your boss at work, you can use the phrase without any risk of getting the person offended. There are a lot of nice people in French-speaking countries who love to help travelers and tourists. When you receive a gift or kind gesture from someone, saying this French greeting phrase is a good way to express a grateful feeling, acknowledge the favor, or show appreciation.
