What’s Up in German

May 5, 2020 By //  by Hogan Murphy

How to Say What’s Up in German

“Whats up” or “wie geht’s” is a very common way to say hello to someone in English and in German. This is a very formal way to greet someone and is commonly used by teenager. You would very rarely hear an adult say this and you would never hear this phrase said in a professional setting.

When visiting Germany make sure you can tell the proper times and places to use this phrase. There are a lot of slang phrases and terms that are known but not necessarily ones you want to take with you if you are on a business trip or a situation where you want to be professional and mature.

When visiting Germany maybe save this phrase for the kids making new friends or greeting your siblings during a family BBQ. There are many other ways to greet someone in German that won’t make you look immature.

Examples of how to say what’s up in German

“Wie geht’s. Lass uns etwas zu Mittag essen und dann ins Einkaufszentrum gehen.”
“what’s up guys? Lets grab some lunch then head to the mall.”

“Wie geht’s? Der Strand sieht heute wunderschön aus.”
“What’s up? The beach looks beautiful today.”
